Development of a new type of packaging materials for the food industry

Mardruk Opakowania Sp. z o.o. Sp. k. has received a grant from the European Union for project No. FENG.01.01-IP.02-3990/23 entitled “Development of a new type of packaging materials for the food industry.”

The subject of the project is the development of innovative, environmentally friendly, monomaterial, recyclable, barrier and/or barrier and active polyethylene or polypropylene packaging products.

The project consists of one module, which includes a total of four tasks, two of which are carried out as industrial research and the next two as experimental development.

As a result, monomaterial barrier, high-barrier and ultra-high-barrier packaging will be developed, characterised by increased resistance to gases (oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide and hydrogen).

This will be the key feature of the developed products and will translate into an extended shelf life of the packaged food products, while ensuring the preservation of the quality and sensory properties of the packaged goods.

The barrier packaging (depending on the type of packaged product and user requirements) may be equipped with an additional internal active layer with antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, which will limit or inhibit the growth of undesirable microorganisms and thus extend and ensure the freshness of the packaged food product.

An important feature of the developed products will be their environmentally friendly character – as they will be monomaterial (made from a single homogeneous material; the inner laminate layer/coating thickness not exceeding 5%), they will be recyclable.

The market implementation will take place immediately after the completion of the research project by introducing the new product into the product portfolio of Mardruk Opakowania Sp. z o.o. Sp. k.

The project is characterised by high added value in terms of environmental performance, constituting an eco-innovation on a market scale, as well as contributing to climate change mitigation through the development of solutions with high recycling potential.

The target group consists of companies involved in the production and distribution of packaging.
